NEWS: Jackson 5 Comeback in 2008?

MJ in a very Wonka-esque pose I am a fan of Michael Jackson. I enjoy his music, I respect him as a musician, and I respect him as a person. I also believe that he is innocent, as proven, of the charges brought against him in ’93 and ’03. I do admit that he is a weird guy… but, hey, a lot of musicians are. And a lot of musicians aren’t the King of Pop.

With that out of the way, I stumbled upon some interesting news just now. According to Leonard Rowe, promoter of MJ’s first solo tour for Off the Wall (Buy it now!), a Jackson 5 reunion tour is in the works. Though the band was very well known in it’s time and it was the launch of Michael’s stardom, a reunion seems pretty iffy to me. Michael left the group shortly after the Victory Tour in 1984 and quickly overshadowed the family band by himself with the success of Thriller (Buy it now!) and pretty much every record he released after that.

As for the reunion, most of the band seems more than willing. Jackie is ready. Tito is ready. Jermaine is ready. Marlon is ready. Hell, even Janet wants a part of the tour despite her being shunned from the band in it’s early days. However, one key element remains… Michael. The rest of the band was shooting for a 2007 tour, however Michael insisted that it “would take a lot of preparation.” They are now praying for 2008. Though not declining to tour with the band, MJ wasn’t overjoyed at the idea. Think about it though…

Would you? If you were Michael Jackson and had everything on your plate that he does, would you do the reunion tour? Would you go back to being the meal ticket for your family who wouldn’t pay you a bit of attention while you were growing up? Would you bounce around on stage, a grown ass man, singing “A B C! One two three!” while your brothers doo-woped in the background? Would you?! I sure as hell wouldn’t. Michael has come too far in his career and matured way too much to flail about on stage and sing the childish lyrics of the Jackson 5, in my opinion. I just can not see it happening.

Will the reunion happen? Signs point to no. However, you never know what he will do. Like I said, he is a weird guy.
