More from Neil Gaiman, The Oddz, Voltaire
Voltaire’s side project, The Oddz, was featured on the recent Neil Gaiman tribute album titled Where’s Neil When You Need Him? with a track named “Come Sweet Death”. The song is based on Death, a character from Neil’s comic series The Sandman, who… well… is death. The album is an awesome compilation of all original songs from a number of bands including The Crüxshadows, Tori Amos, Voltaire/The Oddz (of course), Rasputina, Ego Likeness, and Future Bible Heroes (whose contribution is great, by the way). It really is worth buying, and I say that with all sincerity, so check it out using my Amazon.com link at the bottom of the entry.
So anyway, here’s a little story as to why I’m posting this song. I work at a well-known closeout franchise store where anytime we get anything remotely electronic, I am the one everyone turns to. Seeing as I also work at a well-known electronics franchise store, it’s understandable. We got some video rockers in recently, chairs that sit on the floor with built-in speakers and such, so I brought in an extra mp3 player I had laying around to plug up to the chair to help sell it. Also so I can listen to my music at work instead of just the same ten soft rock songs they play over the store’s system over and over again. Ugh. I did a pretty rigorous selection of songs from my music collection in order to avoid any foul language or adult situations and such. Or, you know, something so goth sounding it scares the old folks who make up most of my clientele. I had the mp3 player going when my manager came over and asked “What is that devil music you’ve got playing?” I know he’s quite a religious man, but I think he was being sarcastic. I think. The song that happened to be playing was, well, “Come Sweet Death” by The Oddz. A song that upon a casual listening sounds pretty upbeat and fun. However, once you pay attention to the lyrics it ceases to be a fun little rock song and becomes quite morbid. Well, I guess it is Voltaire so I should have been prepared…
to wash away the blood that stains
every single part of me.”
Anyway, I took the mp3 player home and loaded it with the Hopeful Machines library. Download link, ahoy!
