More from George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, The Beatles
June 1st marks the 40th anniversary of The Beatles’ seminal album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band being released in England. Today, the 2nd, marks the anniversary of when it made it’s debut over here, across that pond you may know as the Atlantic Ocean. The album was groundbreaking and marked the end of mop-topped Beatlemania, replacing it with a deeper and more inspired band of four geniuses. Four geniuses with drugs, that is. Whether the drugs had a hand in it or not, this is widely regarded as one of, if not the, greatest album ever conceived.
Two similar, yet different renditions of the album were created and released back in 1967: a mono version and a stereo version. The Beatles were present and were involved in the Mono mix of the album, however it is the later-mixed Stereo version which they had no hand in that most are familiar with. Seeing as the Mono version of this album is long out of print, printed only on vinyl and never surfacing on CD, I think it seems fair game to post it online for download in honor of the anniversary. Enjoy!
Side One: (Right-click, save as)
- Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
- With a Little Help from My Friends
- Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
- Getting Better
- Fixing a Hole
- She’s Leaving Home
- Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!
Side Two:
- Within You Without You
- When I’m Sixty-Four
- Lovely Rita
- Good Morning Good Morning
- Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
- A Day in the Life
Aside from the obvious difference in that the sound is coming from both speakers equally as opposed to different music coming from each, there are a number of minor distinctions. Try listening to both of the versions and compare!
Buy it now! (Stereo version, that is)

What a great way to celebrate the anniversary. I hope someone does the same thing for the White Album in 2008.
Thanks for sharing, but it’s too bad that they’re only at 128kbs – you wouldn’t happen to have the original vinyl in order to make higher quality versions, right?
I have the files in lossless FLAC format, but the audio really isn’t that great to start with seeing as it’s ripped from vinyl and uploading 128k is a lot easier on bandwidth and such. If you need FLAC for some reason, it can be found on torrent sites throughout the interwebz.
Will there be a mono Magical Mystery Tour available for download to commemorate the 40th anniversary of MMT?
That’s a good idea… I just might have to do that, I love the Magical Mystery Tour.
Yes I think it is very good album.
Thanks for putting mono MMT on the site. I enjoy listening to the mono beatle albums. Do you know anywhere were I can download “Squid”, an instrumental track by Paul McCartney.
Hmm, I’ve never heard of “Squid” so I’m not sure what to tell you. Let me know if you find it though, you’ve got me interested…
Squid is an instrumental track that was a part of Oobu Joobu a radio program featuring Paul McCartney. There is a bit of information on the web about this. It may be available on download sites such as Limewire.
Awesomeness! Thanks a million (and then some)!
Thank You very much. I have the stereo version on CD, and I’ve been looking for the mono. And, wow it’s better. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is more psychedelic.
I don’t suppose you have “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” by the fourmost to download? Would appreciate it if you do.
Nope, I sure don’t. Good luck on finding it!
