Voltaire, photo by Jimmy LinI’ve mentioned Voltaire before. In fact, I’m a pretty big fan of the man’s work.

His latest album, the self-released To the Bottom of the Sea, contains twelve tracks telling a story of debauchery and pirates and the Industrial Revolution. Four tracks in we get to hear the incredibly upbeat, yet still containing the morbid and dark humor Voltaire has become known for, song “Happy Birthday (My Olde Friend)”. Scientists predict that within two years, this song will replace the traditional “Happy Birthday” song sung on that most joyous yet depressing annual holiday that everyone must celebrate.

Well, that’s not true. It would be neat though.

“Happy Birthday (My Olde Friend)” is Voltaire’s first music video, though hopefully not his last. It was shot by Jochen Schoberth, a familiar face to fans of this music genre, and directed by Voltaire. It also stars one hundred volunteer gothic lolitas cast through his MySpace page. An mp3 of the song can be found on this earlier post.
