More from Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard
Okay. I realize that The Dark Knight has had it’s share of publicity, and posting about it on my blog may not convince any of the three, maybe four, people who have yet to see the film to check it out. But, man…
Epic.
I know what you’re thinking. “Wait, isn’t this a music blog and not a movie blog?” Yes, yes it is. That is why it’s fortunate Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard collaborated to make a damn fine original soundtrack for the movie.
The soundtrack album opens with an intense suite dedicated to the popular villian of the film, the late Heath Ledger’s “Joker”, fittingly called “Why So Serious?”. Read what Hans Zimmer had to say about composing the track in an interview for the Los Angeles Times and hear the track after the break…
Look, I’m German, so I come from the German tradition of Kraftwerk…. But I kept thinking I wanted to find a way to bring corrosion into Gotham — corrosion and recklessness. The funny thing about that piece is that I knew what I wanted to do, but it took me months to actually do it. Nobody could play it.
It’s all about acting and attitude, in a way. It’s very much of the idea of taking one note and expressing any part of fearlessness and recklessness and surprise…. It is very industrial music. I tried to give it a punk attitude. I used to work with the Damned and bands like that.
