Dancing Ferret Discs is unfortunately going to be shutting down operations at the end of this year. Since the early days of the label back in 1998 when Patrick Rodgers, also known as DJ Ferret, decided to expand upon Dancing Ferret Concerts and gamble on a Tallahassee band by the name of The Crüxshadows Dancing Ferret has signed a number of bands and seen a good amount of success from many of them. However, at the end of 2008 Patrick has decided to no longer release new material.
In this entry on the company’s LiveJournal, Patrick goes into detail as to why and how the label will be ending it’s run. He makes a point of saying that the decision will not effect any of Dancing Ferret’s sister projects, namely Nocturne, Dracula’s Ball, or IsoTank. It will also have little effect on the bands who are currently signed to the label or their previous releases, they will just simply have to find a new outlet to produce their future releases. I asked some of the bands their plans, read their responses after the break…
Voltaire (Voltaire.net | MySpace), who had only just recently signed with Dancing Ferret Discs to release his upcoming album was the first to break the news to the public in a blog entry.
However, I do now find myself in the odd position of having a nearly finished CD and no record label to release it. I’ve given it much thought, talked to several people about it and have reached the decision to put it out myself. You and I have a dialogue. We talk. We’re talking right now…. sort of. heh heh
So maybe the time has come for you to come directly to me to get my next CD.
His sixth release, To the Bottom of the Sea is available now for preorder. More information is available through Voltaire’s blog, click here to preorder.
Zoog of Australian industrial band Angelspit‘s (Angelspit.net | MySpace) “(un)official statement” on the matter is short and simple.
Angelspit are spending their entire earnings from CD sales on spray paint, and will be painting the dark alternative music scene RED. Label or no label, Angelspit will continue to wreak havoc. ROCK!
No doubts about that band’s future. They are actually hitting it pretty big, occasionally being featured on the front page of MySpace.com. In fact, at the moment they are the number six “Top Unsigned Artist” on the whole site. Now that is impressive. Check out their new album, Blood Death Ivory. Also, they’re very cool people in person if you ever get a chance to meet them.

Alex Reed of ThouShaltNot (ThouShaltNot Official Site | MySpace) had this to say in an e-mail to me.
We’re obviously disappointed that the label looks to be shutting down, but we of course wish the best to its owner, our friend Patrick. Dancing Ferret has put a lot of time and energy into ThouShaltNot’s career and we’re very grateful. We are just this week self-releasing a brand new limited edition EP (details are at www.thoushalt.net) and we’re working toward the next full length album. We’re currently exploring options as to how best to release music in the future.
The new EP that he mentioned is the New World EP of which the band is only releasing 200 copies of. If there are any left, information of ordering the EP can be found here. You can also catch them on tour.

Ego Likeness (Ego Likeness.com | MySpace) had this to say in a blog post on their LiveJournal.
As some of you may have heard, our label Dancing Ferret is closing.
As for us, there will be a new album out in the fall (one way or another), and the EP’s will continue as planned.
We will still be touring and still be booked through Sepiatone Booking.
On a personal note, our experience with Patrick and Dancing Ferret has been nothing but great. The music business can be a nasty, nasty place, and Dancing Ferret was one of the good guys. We are proud to have been part of it.
Californian rockers The Last Dance (The Last Dance.com | MySpace) replied to my e-mail with this answer.
The Last Dance has enjoyed many years with Dancing Ferret Discs and owe them much gratitude for the support they have given us and our thoughts are with them now and wish Patrick Rodgers the best. As for the future The Last Dance has not come to any decisions regarding our future releases at this time, we will continue to work together with Dancing Ferret this year to sort the best possible outcome for future TLD releases whether they be self released or with another label.

So, for the most part, I don’t think the label’s bands know what they will be doing yet. I suppose it’s just too early to tell.

I just pre-ordered Voltaire’s new album, I expect nothing but amazement from him, and he expects nothing but Snakes from me.
Yeah, I’m going to be pre-ordering a copy pretty soon myself. The life of a music blogger is not a wealthy one.
I’ll try not to send him any snakes though.
