Part five of our feature on The Beatles animated series features episodes sixteen through nineteen. With eleven parts to be posted in total this entry pretty much marks the halfway point.

The cartoons are as originally aired and uploaded in two parts each. The videos are supplied by McCKLENN‘s page on YouTube. Each episode follows the same pattern: an animated short based upon a single track from The Beatles’ extensive catalog (circa 1965) followed by two sing-a-long features and rounded out by another animated short.

The sixteenth episode in the series features John Lennon in a couple different harrowing predicaments. The first toon is appropriately titled “Can’t Buy Me Love”. When John is gifted with a new ring he unwittingly agrees to marry a tribal chief’s daughter. Things work out in the end, however. Well… except for Ringo. Two sing-a-long tracks follow, “Anna” and “Mr. Moonlight”. In the final animated short based on the track “It Won’t Be Long” John is left in a very strange spot when he stumbles upon a Japanese pond littered with shrinking potion. A great episode.

Episode seventeen begins with a cartoon based on “Anna”. Paul McCartney is lured aboard a ghost ship in Japan appropriately named the “Anna”. Of course, it is up to the rest of the gang to save the day. The two songs featured on the sing-a-longs following are “Matchbox” and “Thank You Girl”. In the second animated short for “I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party” the gang leaves John hanging in a museum to experience the wilder side of Greenwich Village. I’ve never been myself, but I would like to.

Number eighteen in the series begins with the cartoon for “Matchbox”. In lieu of constantly hopping from one hotel to another The Beatles get a new trailer. Not an ordinary trailer, mind you. Also there is a volcano! After that there are the two sing-a-long features with “I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party” and “Help!”. In the final cartoon of the episode for “Thank You Girl” the band finds themselves with no money and forcefully imposed upon a diet by their fat-hating management. They end up at a French bakery in search of some free food.

In the beginning of the nineteenth episode The Beatles find themselves in Hawaii in “With Love From Me To You”. The actual title of the song is simply “From Me To You” however it is incorrectly labeled. George Harrison finds himself in a surfing contest with a surfing aficionado named Surf Wolf. The two sing-a-long tracks this round are “Please Mr. Postman” and “I Saw Her Standing There”. After a short trip across the Pacific The Beatles end up in California in “Boys”. Will one of the fab four become Mr. Hollywood?
