More from Gackt, Malice Mizer
Yesterday I, along with countless other people, lost a good friend. After a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis, Justin “Phoenixtear” Johnstone passed away at the age of 26. CrossScar and Savin Jhsoe are two other online aliases he has adopted in the time that I have known him.
I originally met Justin around Dragon*Con 2003, as he was (and has since been) a predominate member of The Alabama Star Wars Syndicate. He had a great personality and was easy to befriend, even for the shy teenager that I was at the time. He was interested in Cosplay, something that I had never had any experience in. One costume of his stuck out that year, a black vinyl outfit with fishnet and a wig. He informed me that it was an outfit that Gackt had worn while with Malice Mizer. Of course, my reaction was something to the nature of “eh… gak? What’s a gak?”
After the convention, he referred me to the live performance of “ILLUMINATI” from Malice Mizer’s merveilles l’espace concert just to see the costume. However, I don’t think he intended on me loving the music. So for first introducing me to Japanese music in general, which has had a very predominate effect of my life in the years since, I have Justin to thank.
Justin has had many projects. As a photographer, he adopted the name PhoenixTear and has been taking pictures for years, some of which can be viewed on his website or his DeviantART page. He was always working with the SWS for a number of charitable organizations. A few of his favorites are Make a Wish, National Wildlife Federation, Magic Moments, and Tigers for Tomorrow. In a post on Justin’s MySpace, his girlfriend Angela requests that in lieu of flowers grievers should consider making a donation to one of these charities. Read the full post here.
You will be missed, Justin.
